First Acupuncture Visit

So I finally got brave enough to try acupuncture. All I can say was that it was amazing. I can’t get over how relaxed I feel. I really liked the acupuncturist. Believe it or not she is not Asian. She’s a Russian Jew. She informed me that lots of people practice acupuncture, not just Asians. She did go to study for a short while in China but that’s about all her association with the Asian culture.

I am trying acupuncture not just for fertility, although I hope it will help with that as well. I want to see if she can help me to lose weight and to feel more relaxed overall. So far for emotional well being I’ll give her a 10 out of 1-10. As far as losing weight, I hope it helps. I heard acupuncture can help with sugar cravings although oddly enough I was craving sugar the minute I left, hmm. Maybe just talking about sugar made me crave some. I can’t expect everything to be cured from one visit, although wouldn’t that have been nice ;-) .

The needles really didn’t hurt, aside from the ones in my ears (as my friend Malya warned me). Even those only hurt going in. My ears still feel a little funny now but nothing terrible. I did start crying a little while I was lying there and prayed a little too. When the session was over she said that that was very good. She quoted “Ying” and “Yang” a little too much, but she wasn’t too out there with new age stuff so that was fine.

The one thing that did bother me was all the baby pictures hanging on the walls – people thanking her for her help getting them pregnant. That always bothers me about fertility offices as well. It’s as if they are trying to sell you the candy. Look what I did for people. Of course you feel like a total failure if you don’t get the baby. Yeah.. Also, she had a painting of a mother nursing her baby in the room she put me in. I don’t know if that’s supposed to send you positive thoughts in that direction but I could have lived without it.

So have you tried acupuncture and what has your experience been like?

I cried too, didn’t know if it had anything to do with the acupunture or the praying. Told you about the ears, its only a second but it kinda tingles the rest of the day. Hope all is well, glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks Malya. I think the crying has something to do with what the needles do. It releases emotions. I could imagine when you do it with fertility drugs there’s even more emotions coming out. Glad to hear I’m not the only one who cries on the table, although I did see an episode of “The Practice” with a patient starting to sob after the needles where inserted,

    “Private Pratice” that is.

I think the tears had to do with energy/emotional release too. Ying and Yang are basic parts of Chinese medicine, co-opted by new- agers.

I’ve known lots of people to use it for various reasons. I really appreciate you sharing your experience with us.

I’ve done acupuncture, and I really should go back and get some more treatments. I had to stop when I went on bed rest with the twins because I just couldn’t get to her office.

  7. Congrats on being open minded to try acupuncture as a fertility treatment. I am an acupuncturist in Boerum Hill Brooklyn and I specialize in womens health issues, I have several clients I am treating with a fertility enhancement protocol now. Please contact me with any questions @ 917 576 9198 . I am also having an acupuncture series at the brooklyn public library starting sundays in October. Good luck!
