Common Decency

Well there are several people here in the shared office space have decided that they should listen out loud to Barak Obama’s speech from last night. This is beginning to piss me off, not because of pollitics but I because I think that when you are in a public area, you should a) not do stuff to annoy those around you and b) don’t bring politics into things. I’m thinking of play some old Nixon speeches just to balance things out. :)

Stuck in the Airport

Well, the flight that I am supposed to be on hasn’t even arrived at JFK yet. In fact the crew of the flight is sitting in the hall leading to the gate so they can take over when it arrives. In addition to the bad weather here in New York City (there have been scattered thunder storms all over the place) it seems that there is some pretty bad weather in the middle of the country which is making a big mess for everyone involved. My flight is supposed to now be taking off at 6:25pm but being that it’s 6:15 right now, I highly doubt that it will be departing on time.

The real annoying thing for me is that the usually reliable Wifi connection here at Terminal 6 is slow and unreliable. Even bringing up an all text page like Drudge Report takes forever. In fact, I am writing this post from a local client that I have installed (Mars Edit for those that were wondering) because I can’t even get to our website. It’s that unreliable.

Cool App for the iPhone

Since I’ve been working from home, I use Vonage for my office line and one of the biggest annoyances is that my iPhone won’t play the .wav files that I receive for a voice mail. Yesterday I finally decided to jailbreak my iPhone (using ziphone), at the behest of a friend,  and found a wonderful application called vonagent which will allow you to control some of your Vonage settings (e.g. setting call forwarding) from your iPhone. Not only does it take care of that but you can now listen to your voicemails as well. I was able to give it a try today and it works as advertised.

Well, at least until the 2.0 firmware is ready.

cute april fool’s joke

Where is Carl Spakler when you need him??

Making the switch

Working from home is has a lot of benefits and I really enjoy it for the most part. One of the annoying things about it however is that our DSL connection is slow on the upload side of things and that really limits the quality of my phone calls (I’m using Vonage for my office line). In addition to that recording Skype interviews (like the one we have coming up for episode 39) have become really difficult to do since we keep loosing the connection.

That is why yesterday I decided to make the switch over to cable and move away from DSL. In theory the connection is 15 times faster than my current connection (15MB/sec vs. 1.5MB/sec) and the uploads are pretty speedy as well (2MB/sec vs. 786kB/sec). The best part is that it will only be $10 more per month after the special is over in 6 months. Short of getting FIOS, this is the best internet connection out there.

The trip so far

Well I made it to Tampa this morning and had my meeting drove about an hour for Kosher food and now have a bad migraine. But for some reason I’m blogging. At this point in my trip I am missing Malky, Rivky and home in general. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to video chat tonight so I’ll feel less homesick. The good news is that I’m going home tomorrow night.

Tomorrow I have one meeting and then lots of time in between the meeting and the flight home. As luck would have it the Pirates are playing a spring training game in the same town that I’ll be in for the meeting so it looks like I may go and watch their opening spring training game. It should be interesting since I have never seen a spring training game before. If I go, I’ll be blogging about the game at my other site The Pittsburgh Lumber Company.

At LGA

I’m sitting here at the airport, once again waiting for my flight to Miami and then Tampa. At least I’m going somewhere warm this time and not to a place like Milwaukee. I’ll be away for 4 days getting back late Thursday night. Malky will be doing the tireless task of taking care of Rivky all week while I’m gone. I’m sure you will be hearing more from her later on about what is going on at the home front.

Speaking of Rivky, she really took my trip very hard this time. She is usually a lot better when I leave, but this time it was tough. I guess that will happen sometimes. I did buy her a new Nintendo DS game because I was leaving (to rid myself of some guilt and give her something to think of me while I’m gone). It’s the Mario vs. Sonic at the Olympics game and from what Rivky was telling me it sounds like a lot of fun. I think that her and Malky will have fun playing it while I’m away.

One of the good things about my traveling these days is that we can usually see each other thanks to iChat AV. It gives a really good picture and sound quality is there as well. It sure beats just talking on the phone. Well, that’s my opinion anyway.

The Knicks and no knack

Yesterday morning I got a call on my mobile from a former co-worker who I still keep in touch with from time to time. It turns out that he had an extra ticket to the Knicks game last night and wanted to know if I was interested in joining the group that was going. After checking with Malky, I rang him back and let him know that I was coming.

The Knicks are absolutely dreadful but they weren’t the real reason that I went, I went to see some old friends and catch up with them.

This is your MacBook, this is your MacBook on eBay

I’ve decided to put my MacBook up for sale on eBay. Why is Aaron doing this you might ask yourself? Well as much as a Mac fan that I am, I have a new laptop from work and I think that I’ll be using that a majority of the time. “But Aaron!”, I hear you say, “what kind of computer would make you give up on your MacBook?”. The answer is quite simple, my job gave me a MacBook Pro. As a result I have an extra laptop and Malky and I agreed that we should sell the MacBook (although I wanted her to use it).

So if you like a great laptop with the best operating system around* then you should bid on the MacBook. Or you can even buy it now! How convenient is that? :)

This morning I woke to the sound of thunder

To paraphrase Bob Seger, but it’s really true. The storms that we had here in NYC were quite amazing. The thunder and lightning that went on for about an hour and a half or so. Not only that but the sheer amount of rain that came down was truly something to behold. And yes, once I was awake I did watch the storm for a while. I have always liked watching rain storms for some reason.

I knew that the rain was bad but I didn’t realize just how bad it actually was. Flights were delayed from JFK, Laguardia and Newark. That is something that you would expect in a rain storm. The really remarkable thing is that some of the train lines were shut down because the rain water actually flooded some of the tunnels and got to the electrified third rail which powers the trains (Hence the expression that you’ll hear political talking heads say “topic X is the third rail of this election”). In fact the F line (the train line closest to us and that I use any time I need to get into Manhattan) was closed down!

It’s days like today that I’m thankful that I work within walking distance from my apartment.
