First Acupuncture Visit

So I finally got brave enough to try acupuncture. All I can say was that it was amazing. I can’t get over how relaxed I feel. I really liked the acupuncturist. Believe it or not she is not Asian. She’s a Russian Jew. She informed me that lots of people practice acupuncture, not just Asians. She did go to study for a short while in China but that’s about all her association with the Asian culture.

I am trying acupuncture not just for fertility, although I hope it will help with that as well. I want to see if she can help me to lose weight and to feel more relaxed overall. So far for emotional well being I’ll give her a 10 out of 1-10. As far as losing weight, I hope it helps. I heard acupuncture can help with sugar cravings although oddly enough I was craving sugar the minute I left, hmm. Maybe just talking about sugar made me crave some. I can’t expect everything to be cured from one visit, although wouldn’t that have been nice ;-) .

The needles really didn’t hurt, aside from the ones in my ears (as my friend Malya warned me). Even those only hurt going in. My ears still feel a little funny now but nothing terrible. I did start crying a little while I was lying there and prayed a little too. When the session was over she said that that was very good. She quoted “Ying” and “Yang” a little too much, but she wasn’t too out there with new age stuff so that was fine.

The one thing that did bother me was all the baby pictures hanging on the walls – people thanking her for her help getting them pregnant. That always bothers me about fertility offices as well. It’s as if they are trying to sell you the candy. Look what I did for people. Of course you feel like a total failure if you don’t get the baby. Yeah.. Also, she had a painting of a mother nursing her baby in the room she put me in. I don’t know if that’s supposed to send you positive thoughts in that direction but I could have lived without it.

So have you tried acupuncture and what has your experience been like?

Snow and mid-winter vacation

So we’ve gotten yet another snowstorm in NYC. Because really we haven’t seen enough of the white stuff this year.

Rivky had a few days off for mid-winter vacation. Rivky and I both went to a new dentist – always fun but good to take care of while she had off. She had her first cavity and filling and did very well. The dentist specials in pediatrics and was very calm and patient with her. (Thanks Stephanie for the referral.) I’m glad we switched dentists. She really didn’t like the old one. She would probably have been screaming had she had to have a cavity filled with him.

Today she spent the day with her best friend and had fun. Mommy also got a much needed break.

The snow has stopped so hopefully there will be school tomorrow.

One of my friends on twitter lives in Israel and she passed this pizza store in Israel. So funny. Would you try a slice if you could?

Show and Tell – sisterly love

I’ve been going through a hard time recently emotionally. This 6.5 year journey of trying to conceive #2 has taken a toll on both my emotional health and on my marriage. I fortunately found a terrific therapist who specializes in infertility. I high recommend to anyone struggling and feels that they can benefit from therapy to find someone who specializes in this field. Any old therapist will not fully get what you are going through. In my most recent session I found out that my therapist herself went through infertility and had multiple pregnancy losses. She also has one 11 year old daughter. Imagine that. If she doesn’t get me who does?

I’ve been improving emotionally slowly but surely. I still have alot of exploring to do as to where we hold on trying for another child. How far are we willing to go financially, emotionally, etc. For right now I’m happy that I’m getting stronger.

My sisters have been wonderful to me through all this. As hard as it is to watch their families grow year by year they’ve really came through for me recently with love and support. Here are a few of the tanglible gifts they’ve given me to help cheer me up.

These flowers where delivered on Friday – so stunning.

This card really touched my heart. My sisters have shared with me how I was like a mother to them growing up. I’m second to oldest and have always been motherly even as a little girl.

These are some soothing lotion, a mist spray and a candle inside a lamp shade – very relaxing when lit. I know my sisters don’t read this blog but just wanted to say I love you guys and thanks for being here for me.

For the two of you who can’t get enough of listening to me, I’ll be helping out Cliff and Stephanie Ravenscraft over at GSPN.tv while they celebrate their first year of doing podcasting full time by doing a 24 hour podcast marathon. They have some really great podcasts and I listen to a good number of them. I’d suggest checking out their ever growing lineup of podcasts. There is going to be something for everyone there, I promise.

Anyway, I’ll be on from 4pm to 5pm (EST) on December 31st. The first half hour I’ll be interviewed for the GSPN Community Voices podcast and the second half hour I’ll be co-hosting the Help, I got a Mac podcast. To see the full schedule of who will be on when, visit gspn.tv/live.

I just watched this funny video – which is actually an ad for JCPenney jewelry. GSPN did an episode based on this ad. Thought I’d share it here as well. Check it out. It’s very funny.

Show and tell 11/30/08 – How trends change

Remember back when we where in primary school what was in vogue then? I remember jump rope, collecting stationary and stickers. Today things are different. At least in Rivky’s school they are. The collection is paper napkins (?) – don’t know who came up with that one. The cool thing to make is rubber band balls. This kept Rivky very busy last weekend. Here is the result of her efforts. It bounces quite well I might add.

We had Rivky’s parents/teachers conference tonight at her school. It went pretty well. Both her teachers said she was a very fine, sensitive and caring girl. Her morning teacher also added that she was a good friend and has a presence to her. There’s a few areas in which she needs to study more but overall I think they are happy with her. Always nice to hear that we are doing something right to raise her well.

Rivky started music lessons this week. She seems really happy about it. I’m happy as well that we are able to do this for her. Growing up without a lot of money, music lessons where not something in our family budget. Although my father did teach me how to play guitar. It really wasn’t my thing though. I couldn’t get passed the discomfort of pressing down on the strings. So will see how far she gets with the lessons. Here she is on the Casio.

I couldn’t help but include these beautiful amaryllis this time with roses in this weeks show and tell. Don’t the colors remind you of Thanksgiving? Perfect timing huh.

I thought I’d show off some more needlework that I’ve done in the past. I did this cross stitch after Rivky was born. It was the hardest needlework I’ve ever done. It started out as a blank white canvas with instructions of where to stitch each stitch. Lots of counting and redoing stitches were involved. I don’t even know how I managed to do this while dealing with the early sleep deprivation days.

I must say the end results are pretty cute. I was nice to be able to customize it as well with Rivky’s birth stats. Don’t know if I’d ever attempt to do such hard needle work again though.
