Are we not telling Women everything?

This morning’s Washington Times has an interesting article talking about one doctor that feels we as a society are not giving women enough information about infertility while they are in their younger years (I’m talking about their 20’s).

“There is so much focus on preventing pregnancy … a vital truth is being lost,” Dr. Grossman said, citing medical studies about age-related infertility, especially the sharp decline in women’s fertility after age 30

The question that I have for Dr. Grossman is does she want all women to be barefoot and pregnant? I doubt it, but I would imagine that if women knew about when their prime fertility years are, some may choose to do something about it. I’m all for freedom of choice, but I am also all for giving everyone the information that they need to make that decision.

Fired because of IVF?

Here is an interesting article from the Chicago Sun-Times where a french woman, teaching in a private school, was fired for becoming pregnant via IFV.

My personal opinion is that the school is a private school and can fire or hire who they want for what ever reasons, although my heart does go out to the woman. Here is the quote that I found interesting:

Kelly Romenesko had said her firing was illegal because male staffers were not disciplined for having in vitro fertilization.

I have one question about that claim, how does a man have IVF? Has she been hanging around with Arnold Schwarzenegger??

Playing with Numbers

If you follow the tech news at all, you know that a few weeks ago Apple released some new software iWork ‘08, their office suite, and iLife ‘08 their suite of apps for everything else. The major piece of this news, to me at least, was the release of some new software in iWork called Numbers. Apple’s spreadsheet application.
I downloaded the 30 day trial and have been playing with it, especially Numbers since we use lots of spreadsheets for work. So I have decided to give my thoughts about this new software.

“Apple iWork ‘08″ (Apple)

Infertility and ineqality in treatment

Good article from Karen Bray of the Infertility Network UK about how they are helping couples in the UK in dealing with the “post code lottery” which we have spoken about in the podcast and written about here as well.  It’s good to see an organization stepping in and filling the void.

Infertle Councelor now helps others

Bowling Green Daily News has a nice little human interest story about a woman that went through infertility and now is a councelor helping other couples who are now going through the same ordeal.

A nice take on paying it forward.

IVF Donations in Austrailia? Maybe

There is not a lot of info in this article, but it seems that maybe soon Australian couples that need IVF may be able to receive an embryo that was donated.

UPDATE: There is more info about this here.  It seems that there is an interesting twist to the story and that is that the couples that donate the embryos will be able to choose who they can donate their embryos to.

The Results are in…

That’s right folks, according to podcastingnews.com the votes have been counted over at podcastawards and the winner for best podcast in the health/fitness category is…….

not us :(

We gave it a good try and again Malky and I would like to thank each and everyone of you, our listeners, friends, family and random people that I paid off that voted for us.

I have to admit (as I said on the last podcast) that I am not surprised that we didn’t win since we were up against a podcast called Sex is Fun. Heck if I didn’t have a vested interest in winning, I would have voted for them too!

Well, congrats to the folks over at Sex is Fun and all of the other winners.

Does a needle a day keep the doctor away?

I know, we’ve seen lots of articles about how acupuncture and other alternative medicines can help with the treatment of infertility. (I think that it’s close race between that and the UK Post code lottery for what we have posted about the most.) Any how, here is another article about the subject with what I think is an interesting twist.

Previous studies have also reported the effectiveness of acupuncture for infertility. A 2004 study conducted by the Reproductive Medicine and Fertility Center in Colorado found that 51% of women who underwent both IVF and acupuncture treatment at the same time became pregnant, while only 36% of those who only underwent IVF did. The latter group also had higher rates of miscarriage and stillbirth (20%) compared to those women who had received acupuncture (8%).

A 2005 study conducted by Shanghai University in China found that acupuncture also helped treat male infertility. Of the men who participated, those who had acupuncture had an increased percentage of sperm in their semen; their sperm was also healthier than their counterparts who did not undergo acupuncture with infertility treatment.

Thanks to everyone

Well, the voting is done with over at the people’s choice podcast awards. Malky and I want to thank all of you who took the time out to vote Much love to you all.
