Another Multiple Births article

With the news over the last few weeks of two sets of sextuplets being born (and some of them dying) there has been lots of news about the dangers of multiple births especially when fertility medication comes into play. This article from CBS News is another example of that.

iPhone and Exchange - Finally Together?

As I mentioned in a previous post:

There is one major caveat with what I have been talking about so far. And that is that not all of the specs and features have been released to the public, so there may be an actual hook into exchange that I don’t know about. If there is indeed a way to connect to an exchange server, then I’ll have to revisit things when the iPhone comes out at the end of the month.

Well, if this report/rumor is true, then it looks like I’m about to revisit things.

Sprint’s plans for combating the iPhone

Apple Insider has a report about what will be some of Sprint reps will be saying to get their peeps to stay with Sprint instead of going over to AT&Tingular. I thought that I would do a little counter point to some of them.

  • “Using the iPhone on the GSM/EDGE network may be like having a really powerful computer on dial up.” - This is a good point even though AT&T is going to be speeding up the GSM portion a bit
  • “Whether you want music, email, web surfing or business files, our phones will download everything faster.” - See above
  • “Concerned about coverage? I think you’ll see that we are comparable or better than all other carriers. Let me show you the map on our Power Network Coverage Tool to verify your coverage area.” - I don’t know much about their coverage so we’ll leave that one alone.
  • “We have many handsets that are MP3 players.” - Have you seen what these phones look like? What about the usability of them? Are any of them going to function like an iPod?
  • “You want to have music with your phone? Let me show you the new Upstage or the Fusic II.” - Ditto my comments above
  • “Any music phone from Sprint lets you download songs instantly – out of thin air.” - Also at $.99 you would think that it’s a good deal. The question is what the sound quality is and what can you do with them once they are on the phone.
  • “Are you sure 4G or 8G is enough storage for you? To give you a comparison, most iPods/MP3 players hold 40 to 60Gigs or more.” - Really? Then why are Apple’s biggest sellers the shuffle and the nano? Not only that but there are three models that are 30GB or more compared to the 4 that are 8gb or less and that isn’t even counting the iPhones which would make it that the lower capacity devices would be double to the higher capacity devices.
  • “The Upstage takes external mini-disks for unlimited storage.” - So? It’s not all about the storage. It’s about getting to your music, videos or whatever, quickly and easily.
  • “Sure we have less expensive phones than the iPhone. The MotoQ, for example, is only $79 and is an MP3 player, PDA, camera, mobile internet device, and of course, a phone.” Being the happy user of a Windows mobile phone, I can tell you how miserable it is to actually get to your music. Not only that but web browsing on that thing isn’t fun unless you have mobile friendly sites that you like to visit (which I do). If Apple can deliver half of the performance that they are promising for web browsing , it will be a good thing.
  • “Most current Smartphones have secure email necessary for business functionality. “ - I’ll call BS on this one since it’s not secure email but rather a connection to Exchange that is the issue. I’ll leave it to the hackers to determine if it’s secure or not. Of course, I talked about iPhone and Exchange earlier.
  • “The iPhone uses Yahoo and Mac email which is not secure. “ - Another BS statement. .Mac and Yahoo mail use something akin to IMAP which is an industry standard and quite secure
  • “[iPhone] has a non-replaceable battery. “
  • “[iPhone] offers no external storage. ” - Both of these are true and there is no reason to dispute them. The only thing that I would say is that how many times have you needed to change the battery of your phone?
  • “The iPhone is an Apple product and has some nice features. It also has a nice price. Do you really need all those features in one device?” - That is something that I’ll leave to everyone to make their own decision.

Got a call from an old friend, we used to be real close

Seriously, I did. Although he isn’t giving them a stand up routine in L.A. it was good talking with him again. It turns out that since I last spoke with him, he got divorced, re married and moved. Not bad for about 6 years.

Rivky and I were talking the other day about boating and she pointed out to me that’s she never been on a boat before. I thought it was about time we remedied that situation and today we took her row boating for the first time in Clove Lake Park - a park in Staten Island. It was a beautiful day and nice to get out as a family and enjoy ourselves. Hope everyone is taking advatage of the beautiful weather before it gets too hot.

The Pirate Parrott as Tony Soprano.

I have to admit that I never watched the Sopranos. It was just one of those shows that never made it on my radar screen. Even though I never watched it, you would have to live on a desert island not to know about the controversial ending to the series that the show had a few weeks ago. It seems that the Pirates went and made a spoof of the ending and it looks pretty amusing.

New Varicocele procedure may be in th offing

An interesting article that talks about a new Varicocele procedure and goes into a lot of depth about the problem as well.

Hypnosis and IVF (Part 8,754)

Interesting little press release (so take what they say with a grain of salt or more) about how a clinic in Spain is helping more women become pregnant through IVF by having them undergo hypnosis.

A small British run alternative health clinic in Southern Spain has achieved a considerable level of success in helping women become pregnant, both when using IVF and without, which fits in with other research into the phenomenon world wide.
A team from Soroka University, Israel, found that in a control group, 28% of women who were hypnotised became pregnant, compared with 14% of those who were not. The study of 185 women was presented to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology conference in Berlin.

At least they have started to have a study done.

Slowing down the biological clock

This is a pretty interesting development in the fertility fight.

Fertility researchers in Britain are looking at a protein already found in women’s eggs that could be used to keep them viable indefinitely. They are trying to determine whether there is a way to manufacture the protein in a pill or injectable form.

As much as we try, the one thing that we can’t fight is when your fertility stops. This could extend it and offer some additional hope.
