Conception Kits

Sounds like an interesting idea, although it doesn’t sound like it would help with a lot of other factors.

A link between trans fats and PCOS? Maybe

As we know, one of the causes of infertility on the woman’s side is PCOS. It now seems that there may be a link between that and the intake of trans fats. Here is the synopsis of the study:

The study looked at data from the Nurses’ Health Study. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health analyzed information from 18,555 women who were all married and trying to get pregnant between the years of 1991 and 1999.

The study found that there was no link between ovulation-related infertility and overall fats consumption or calorie intake. However, the study found that if 2 percent of total calories came from trans fats instead of the healthier monounsaturated fats, the risk for ovulation-related infertility doubled. For every 2 percent increase in the amount of calories that women received from consuming trans fats instead of carbohydrates, the risk of infertility increased by 73 percent.

Maybe we should be happy that cities like New York and others have outlawed cooking with the stuff.

molecule a link to solving infertility?

Interesting article from the hindustan times about researchers that have found a molecule that aids in implanting the embryo into the womb. We have already dealt with the topic of an imbalance of a protein potentially causing male infertility, but this is a new twist.

Men Behaving Badly

No, I wasn’t a fan of that sitcom that lasted too long (about one TV season). What I am talking about here is the problem that is going on in Australia.

“But our attempts to research this have been incredibly difficult because men just don’t want to talk about it.”

I agree that it is an embarrassment and a shame to have to admit that you have a problem. Having said that, this is not the way to solve the problem either. If you need to be part of a study to help determine why male factor infertility is happening then do it for crying out loud. I know that if I had that opportunity, I would take it. Moreover, do you think that this is easy for women to talk about? It is just as much as a sigma for the Women as it is for the men.

Delaying Childbearing

The Atlantic has what looks like an interesting article about an issue that we brought up a few episodes ago on the podcast (albeit in passing). I have not gotten a chance to go through all of it yet, but if I do, I’ll try and post my thoughts. Here is the one paragraph overview of the article:

Though career counselors and wishful thinkers may say otherwise, women who put off trying to have children until their mid-thirties or later worsen their chances of becoming pregnant—and risk losing out on motherhood altogether. Maybe society should enable them to delay their careers instead of their childbearing.
