Look into my eyes. You are getting sleeeepy….

interesting article from Australia’s daily telegraph (don’t know which city, sorry about that) that has some “experts” claiming that IVF is no longer needed but rather you just need to have some hypnosis to get your body to work again.

Here is an interesting quote from the article:

There’s apparently a reality-TV show in the US where cameras track women on IVF, with the winner the first to conceive - the inference being that it’s the woman’s fault if she’s unable.

Really? I have never heard of this show here in the US. If you have heard of this show, leave a comment and let me know what channel and time the show is on.

Can Stem Cells help cure male interfility?

Unfortunately there are men out there who aren’t able to produce their own sperm and need to rely on sperm donors to help their spouse become pregnant. Well, if a researcher from Newcastle University in England has his way that may be a thing of the past. Karim Nayernia the aforementioned researcher has discovered a way to take bone marrow stem cells and turn them into immature sperm cells.

Nayernia said his research suggested that “doctors may one day take a normal, adult cell — from bone marrow or another tissue — and coax it into becoming a sperm cell. These sperm cells could then be put into the testes of infertile men, allowing them to conceive with their partners.”

I would caution that this is only at the beginning of the research and there is a long way to go until this actually becomes practice.

Infertility Fund for Maine??

There is a proposal winding it’s way through Maine’s legislature that would allow patients that are going through infertility to apply for a grant to help defray some of the costs. Rep. John Robinson is the one that is spearheading this piece of legislation and he says:

“To me, it’s offering the opportunity to folks who don’t have the means to pay for infertility treatment but do have the means to support a child,” he said.

Some of t he comments there are amusing, but there was one comment which said infertility is a condition and not a disease. I seem to recall that someone we interviewed (I think it was Dr. Domar but I’m not sure) said that the Center for Disease Control classified infertility as a disease. I did a quick google search but didn’t find anything that confirms that. If you know of a link, please leave a comment.

Thanks in advance.
