The Bengals’ Standards for their players

Earlier this week another player from the Cincinnati Bengals got arrested. The good news for Bengals fan’s is that they are finally leading the NFL in something. Gary Treible from the Pittsburgh Steelers Mailing List found an original draft of Bengals owner Mike Brown list of standards for his players (or maybe he made them up, I’m not sure). Here they are:

Rule 1 - A player may not play in a Pop Warner League and for the Bengals during the same season.

Rule 2 - Games are on Sunday. If you are staying in a hotel in another city, have them wake you by Sunday. Remember, we need 11 (that’s ten plus one) to play.

Rule 3 - The stripes go on the outside.

Rule 4 - Even though the fans leave by half-time, you have to stay for the whole game. Remember we need 11 (that’s ten plus one) to play.

Rule 5 - All NFL playoff games are shown on the large screen TV in the Bengals training facility during the post season. All Bengals players are required to attend. Hall of Famers typically bring the food, so you may want to grab something to eat before each game.

Rule 6 - Off the field attire. The Bengals choose an entertainment industry partner each year to promote the team and the product of our partner. This year our partner is NBC Television. Prior to every game, and in the locker room, each Bengal will wear a tee shirt promoting the hit NBC TV show “The Biggest Loser”.

Rule 7 - You are NOT allowed to sit with the players on the opposing team’s bench. Even for a little while.

Rule 8 - Prison. Try to schedule prison terms for the off season, unless you are hurt. Typically, we start to play in late August and are pretty much done by mid-October, but REMEMBER we need 11 (that’s ten plus one) to play. Talk to your lawyer, he will know when it’s August.

Rule 9 - Sportsmanship. Remember the Bengals creed, “It’s not wining that counts, it’s the fun of free agency.” You are on one of the “fun-ist” teams in all of professional sports. Many of the best Bengals ever to play game have distinguished careers with other teams.

Rule 10 - The Bengals stand for exelinse.

That new to you car smell

The deed is almost done. Last week we went car shopping and found a car that we like. Well, it’s a car malky likes and I’m OK with ;) . It’s a 2004 Chevy Impala and the nice thing is that we actually stayed within our budget. Before we sent ahead with buying the car I got the vin number from the dealer and checked to see what carfax had to say about the car. And I am happy to report that the car was clean, no accidents or anything of the sort. We should be able to get the car tomorrow afternoon which is perfect timing since we have to give up the rental tomorrow as well. I’ll try to put up some pics of the new car tomorrow or Tuesday.

I am also feeling a lot better. The pain that was in my chest is completely gone and it doesn’t looks like I have a fractured rib, or my mutant healing power kicked in a little late. This means I am not going to be suing anyone and I am quite happy about that since I don’t like those kind of things nor those kind of lawyers.

You gotta love the onion

This “article” from the onion pretty much describes how all the Pirate fans feel. But it’s one funny article. (Hat tip: The Pirates mailing list)

crash

It sure has been a busy week. Where to even start? Oh yeah, how about with my car getting totaled. That’s right, totaled. Last Friday afternoon I was driving home from the office and getting ready for a weekend in Far Rockaway to see my sister, brother in law and neices whom I have not seen for about a year and a half. Driving along 48th street (a south bound one way street) I had a green light and I got into the insection. Out of nowhere heading westbound was a van that decided to run his red light and proceeded to plow into me. Hitting me on the front driver side panel resulting in the damage that you see below.

After I got hit, I kept moving but headed into a wall which lead to the damage to the front of the car:

Hatzolah came on the scene in about a minute and put me onto a backboard, securing my head and then taking me to the emergency room, as a precautionary measure. A few hours later I was released but was unable to go to Far Rockaway for Shabbos, but Malky kept her head and had gone to a local take out place to get some food for us to eat on Shabbos. Sunday Malky, Rivky and I got a ride to Far Rockaway with my father and spent the day with my family.

On Tuseday I was finally able to get the accident report and Wednesday the car got taken to the body shop. On Friday I got the news that the car was totaled since there was extensive damage to the frame of the car. I now have to wait and see how much I’ll be getting for the car from the insurance company. Hopefully I will know that by the middle of this week.

Interesting rumor

Thinksecret is reporting that Apple will be releasing a spreadsheet program called “Charts” at MacWorld in January as part of iWork. If true, this will complete the suite and kill off appleworks for good. I’m interested in this although I don’t really use that type of software on my Mac (yet). It would be good to have nothing Microsoft on my MacBook.

Of course if you want to be Microsoft free right now, there are other options.

Happy 4th of July

I hope that everyone has been enjoying their day off today. For me it was kind of hectic. It all started last night when Malky noticed that the refrigerator wasn’t working properly. This caused our milk to spoil and everything else that we had in the fridge to be warm. Suffice it say the situation was not cool. Since it was at night, we couldn’t really do anything so we wait to see if the situation would change. It didn’t. I spoke with the landlord and gave me the number of the repair person that they use for these kind of things. He actually came over today and took a look at the situation. He said that the problem was that it needed to be defrosted which we proceeded to take care of. I can say that it is cooler in the fridge but not at cold as it should be. Not only that but now the freezer stuff like ice cream is quite soft. We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see what happens.

The other part of my day was busy but not as urgent as the fridge situation. I went to Lowes and got a new grill, partly subsidized by the person who destroyed my old one. I took a good 40 minute bike ride all the way down to the Coney Island boardwalk, paid some bills, and updated Quicken. Tonight I hope to break in the new grill a bit by doing a little grilling.

Thought for today

“It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

—John Adams

From the Because I can department…

I was messing around with some software (which is in Alpha right now) that allows you to run Windows apps in OS X without have to run a virtual machine or boot into windows with Boot Camp. As it turns out, our software is unsupported (not surprising since it’s alpha software) but I got it running with no trouble at all. The software still is running a bit slow but I can imagine that as the software gets more and more stable. Here is a screen shot:

Just Embarassing

I was going to leave it go about the two Pirate players getting into the All Star game I am really happpy for both of them for different reasons. For Jason Bay, I am really happy that he’ll be in the starting line-up. Especially after he got so dissed last year by not even being put into the game by the classless Tony LaRussa. If he were added to the roster later, I doubt the same fate would have been in store for him this year since Phil Garner has a better understanding about these things. I’m sure that the “love” between LaRussa and McLendon didn’t help things for JBay but he should have been mature enough to put that aside.

And now for Freddie Sanchez, This is a guy who started the season as the utility player not on the All-Star ballot and worked his way into the starting line-up and is leading the NL in batting average. It’s a great story. IIRC we also picked up freddie in the trade that send Bronson Arroyo to the Red Sox. At least this makes the trade a wash for Mr. Littlefield.

In spite of being happy for these two I am now ashamed and embarrassed for the team is somethign that I saw on Honest Wagner’s site. According to Dejan Kovacevic’s weekly Q&A on the Post-Gazett’s website the Pirates actually had their employees stuffing the ballot box. Not only for Jason and Freddie but for putrid, free agent pick ups the likes of Jeramy Burnitz! I would understand that if the team urged the fans to vote for their favorite players (they did that in spades), that all the teams do - and it’s the fans doing the voting. But to have the employees actually going and filling out the form at mlb.com just so the Pirates can attempt to save face by having a player in the starting line-up (as Marci suggested to me this morning) is just the nadir of stupidity.

This team and organization has become a joke both on and off the field. There needs to be major change from the owner all the way down to the Manager.

amazing. simply amazing

When was the last time a team that was as putrid as the pirates are, have two all-stars come from their team? I’m happy for both those guys, especially Freddie since he wasn’t even on the ballot but I guess leading the league in batting average will do something for you.
