Welcome to the Carnival!

It’s amazing what you read these days. I was getting my daily dose of funny over at IMAO and I noticed that yours truly will be hosting the Carnival of Comedy next week. My thanks to spacemonkey for allowing me to host the carnival.

The first night of Chanukah

As I am sure that you know by now, the holiday of Chanukah started last night. One of the things that I did was buy the entire family a gift. A new digital camera, the Kodak Easyshare Z760. It’s a nice upgrade from the old digital camera since this is 6.1 mega pixels and it has a 3x optical zoom. The difference between the two are like night and day. Here are a few shots from the new camera:

A quick Chanukah Primer

Lawrence Simon (the token jew over at imao) decided to help all those non jews in telling them what Chanukah is all about in FAQ (frequently asked questions) form. It’s very insightful so enjoy!

The London Undergound

I meant to post this during the NYC transit strike but have not had a chance until now. This is a parody of a real song about the London Underground and it’s really funny. Especially since the underground was planning a strike of their own, it is fitting. I would like to mention that there are explicit lyrics in the song so don’t listen to it around those with sensitive ears.

I would like to give a shout out to my co-worker from across the pond, DT who let me know about the song.

Strike Bits n’ Bobs

At 12:00am this morning NYC had a full transit strike. No busses or trains (subways) were running. I don’t have a issue anymore about traveling into Manhattan since I now work in the same borough that I live in, Brooklyn. But tens of thousands of others (including one of my brothers-in-law) have to find alternate means of getting into the city. Many of these people make far less than what the TWU makes and these people don’t have the benefits that the TWU has. The whole situation is quite ridiculous.

Here are some interesting bits of news from the strike:

  • WCBS TV is reporting that there is a split in the management of the TWU (transit worker union) and that the international arm may take over running local 100 and start negotiations again.
  • As always, Jane Galt (who has been having some problems with Dell) has some good insight about the strike and makes some comparisons with the air traffic controller strike back in 1981 and why that aren’t the same.
  • It seems that the TWU has blog and a lot of the comments are not very supportive of the union. (Hat tip to the instapundit)

A Good Assessment of the NSA Surveillance Program

Orin Kerr over at The Volokh Conspiracy has a lengthy but good overview of the legal issues regarding the whole NSA surveillance program that was revealed late last week. Recommended reading to all that are interested.

Sharon has Minor Stroke

He is stable according to Reuters. It will be interesting to see how this will affect the upcoming election where his new party, Kadimah, was ahead in the most recent polls. Will this scare Israelis into not voting Sharon who has been trying to strike a delicate balance of peace and security? It will be interesting to watch.

Dodging the bullet

Two Friday’s ago, I got a call from my dad. I have learnt that when my father calls out of the blue (especially when he should be at the office) that the news isn’t good and this was no exception to the rule. My step mother was in the hospital for what looked to be a brain tumor. It wasn’t large and they thought it was a primary tumor and the surgery could be soon as opposed to right away. Although that’s good news, it was still a scary proposition.

As the week progressed, she finally got moved to the University of Penn hospital from the smaller hostipal she was initially staying in. The delay seems to have been an issue of the first hospital not being happy with the decision to move her to the U Penn hostipal since they would lose out on a kickback “referral fee”. In the end, she finally got moved to the right hospital and was going to have a surgery scheduled for last Wednesday.

My dad called Wednesday night to let me know that they discovered it wasn’t a tumor at all but rather a virus that was causing all of the problems. She had a procedure done and she is now resting comfortably in the hospital and the insurance has given the green light for her to have a week at the rehab center since she still isn’t able to move her left arm.

Apprentice Blogging

This is something that I have not done since the first edition of “The Apprentice” (Trump Style), blogging about the finale of the show. I have to say that I am impressed that the show has learned from their past live shows and have actually admitted that the final tasks are pre-recorded and interspersing the final task with talking to fired candidates and other nonsense.

Both candidates are the best since the first Apprentice and either one would do well with Trump but from the editing that I have seen so far of the final tasks, I think that Rebecca will get the job, Let’s see what happens, shall we?

Update 1: I may have typed too soon, Rebecca isn’t looking too good right now.

Update 2: Just finished Randall’s task and he did a great job recovering from not having a plan B.

Update 3: Rebecca is half way through her event and it still doesn’t look good.

Update 4: I think that she pulled it out. I honestly don’t know who is going to win.

Update 5: This is interesting, they are having the teams actually getting into an argument about their leaders.

Update 6: Both stuck up for themselves very well in the boardroom. I am leaning toward Rebecca winning.

Update 7: This is the worst part, where the other candidates talk live. This is just filler and needless at that.

Final Update: I was shocked and dismayed that when Trump asked about the posibility of hiring Rebecca, Randal said he should be the only one hired. He’s a classy guy but that was just a classless move. And poor Rebecca, she looked like she was about to cry when Randall slammed the door on her face.

If you think about it, Trump was leaning that way when he ask about the jobs first and when both of the said they would take different jobs, it set the whole thing up very nicely. Randall then went and threw it all away. Amazing.

Snowed Out

This is the third bit of snow that we have had in about a week. I would say that it’s the most we have had as well. They (and it’s always they isn’t it?) are expecting something around 3 - 6 inches in the city with more for the hinterlands. I have already gotten a call from Rivky’s school letting me know that there will be no school today. Gratefully, she is still sleeping and I won’t have to wake her up for a while now.

From my kitchen I can look out my porch door and see the snow still falling pretty heavily and in what looks like decent sized chunks. The car is already covered quite well and will be a joy to clean off. The silver lining in this cloud is that aside from cleaning off the car, I don’t have to worry about anything else. The landlord does a good job of getting our sidewalks and the parking lot cleaned up. Although with Shabbos starting so early this afternoon (4:10pm) I wonder how much will get done.
