Cuban to buy the Bucs? I can only wish

I missed the big hoopla about this article since it seems that it was published over Shabbos. But Pittsburgh native Mark Cuban said that he would have an interest in buying the Pirates if the circumstances were right. This created quite a fuss over on the Pirates mailing list and rightfully so. Although baseball is not a win now type of sport as basketball is, I think that he would really give some creditability to the franchise with both fans and players alike. One of the first things that Cuban did when he bought the Mavs (from I think Ross Peroit or one of his companies) was to ask the players what was needed to make players want to play in Dallas. He implemented these suggestions and players wanted to come and play in Dallas. He also gave the management the necessary tools and budget to get good players. Something that the current owner isn’t doing.

Of course at this point I almost see myself as Londo Molari in the first season of Babylon 5. After 11 (and soon to be 12) loosing seasons, I desperately want the Pirates to reclaim their rightful place in baseball’s universe. All I need is for Morden to show up to my apartment (or office) and ask me what I really want. I would take his deal in a New York minute. Now that I think of it, I have a feeling that the Shadows have already found their puppets. The Boston Red Sox!

Getting Ready for the New Season

I have to say that I am ready for the new Season of SciFi Channel’s Friday line up of shows. In fact the best stuff that I watch is now consistantly on non over the air TV. Before I go off and talk about what I’m watching, let’s get back to the Sci-Fi line up:
8:00pm: StarGate: SG1 - This show is now going into it’s 9th season and it will almost be like a new show. With Richard Dean Anderson (my personal favorite on the show) leaving and being replaced by Ben Browder, a new group of bad guys, and other cast changes it will be interesting to see how they develop over the first half of the season. I have to admit all though I like the show, I am not as excited about their start as I am with the other two shows.
9:00pm: StarGate: Atlantis - They really hit their stride at the end of last year and this year looks very interesting with more of a look into the origin of the Wraith and new cast members to mix in as well.
10:00pm: Battlestar Galatica - This may be the best show on TV and is not the same show that you remember from the late 70s early 80s. This is a human drama which happens in space. The camera angles that they use make it even more real. Think of it almost like a documentary with how they use the cameras. You really need to watch this show from the beginning.

I’m not a Junkie for your Broadband

For the past month I have been going rough withdrawal because I have been without a broadband connection at home. As much as I loved my ISP (Speakeasy) the cost per month between DSL and phone service was at about $90. So Malky and I decided to cut costs.

The easiest way to do that was to get a much cheaper DSL connection since I am no longer working from home (even when I was working from home my DSL connection was the basic home package with a pitiful upload speed). I looked into it and I saw that MCI had their DSL package for $20/month tie that in with a $30/month phone package from MCI and the savings was a nice $40/month.

I did my due dilligence about the download speed, upload speeds and if they would be able to service my phone number. All seemed to be OK so I decided to make the move. It took them a few days to transfer the number over and then another week or two for the dsl service to be up and running. I waited for a few days and didn’t receive their modem. I gave them a call and found out that the DSL order was never placed! As you can imagine, I was not a happy camper with this turn of events. I decided to give them a second chance and placed the order again. About two days later, we got a call telling me that they can’t actually process the dsl order because we are two far away from the CO. I called BS right away and asked them why was it possible for other ISPs to give me a DSL connection but not MCI. They had no answer for me.

At that point I called several other ISPs but they couldn’t provide me with a connection with out my dial tone being provided from Verizon. So I had several choices at this point I could:
Get phone service with Verizon but use a different DSL provider
Get both my DSL and phone service with Verizon
Get a naked line (no dial tone) with DSL service from Speakeasy and VOIP service.

My heart was set on going with option #3 since I wanted to get rid of the 847 pound gorilla that is Verizon, but Malky wanted to have a land line and as long as I was going to be having DSL service I was happy. So we decided to go with Verizon. Now in theory we should have service next Monday. It will be quite nice not to have to borrow my neghibor’s Wi-Fi connection (MH you really need to fix that….)
