Finding the Ark

Recently I found a cool blog that deals with archeology and ancient judasim. Sadly I forgot what site I saw a link so I can’t give credit where it’s due. However, many thanks to Jen for posting about it and reminding me about it.

Last week they had an interesting article about how there is now a guy, Vendyl Jones, who has been blessed by a Kabbalist who said that now is the time to find the Ark of the Covenant (here’s a hint, they don’t think that it’s located in a warehouse owned by the U.S. Government.)

It’s interesting news but personally, I don’t really buy it. First of all, this kabbalist is someone that is anonymous. There is nothing that I hate more then anonymous anything. For example ask Newsweek how they feel about anonymous sources these days. There are a lot of people who claim they are kabbalists and they are just complete charlatans. There is no way of knowing if this guy is legit or not.

Secondly, I think that Mr. Jones’ interpratation of some of the verses is way off. For example, he says:

“Chapter One in Isaiah: ‘How has the holy city become a harlot? Righteousness filled the street, but now murderers. The ruler is a friend of thieves and the ministers desire bribes.’”

“The prophet wasn’t talking about his day – he was talking about now. ‘Therefore, says the L-rd, I will restore them to their beginnings. I will set judges up as at first, and counselors as in the beginning.’”

The Sharon government will soon be history, Jones asserts, and the Sanhedrin (the Jewish High Court of 71 judges) will take its place and lead the Jewish people. “The Sanhedrin was established October the 13th of last year. Now all we have to do is have an election to elect counselors. The Sanhedrin is like a Senate and the elected counselors are like a House of Representatives.”

His understanding of what the Sanhedrin is totally wrong. The Sanhedrin part legislative branch (both the House of Representatives and the Senate) and part Supreme Court, if you will. They handled both the application of Torah law in everyday life and jurisprudence issuses. For a better explaination of what the Sanhedrin is check out this explaination from Rabbi Kaplin.

So, in short because of these two issues I don’t expect this expidition to meet with any success.

Coq au Vin

Here is the recipe that I mentioned in the previous post. We found it in this book and I can attest to how good it actually is. If you would like to add an extra punch to this dish, just exchange cayenne pepper for the paprika. Just make sure you use only 1/4 teaspoon of the cayenne pepper as opposed to the 1/2 teaspoon for the paprika. The other thing that we do to make it a little healthier is use chicken cutlets instead of quarters of chicken.
2 pounds chicken pieces
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 cups (8 ounces) mushrooms, halved
1 cup chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup dry red wine
1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley
1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary?
1/8 teaspoon dried thyme
Remove skin from the chicken; rinse and pat dry. Season with salt, if using.
On a piece of wax paper, combine the flour, paprika, pepper, and nutmeg. Dredge the
chicken in the flour mixture.
In a 6-quart nonstick pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook 3 minutes; turn and cook 3 minutes longer. Remove chicken from pot.
Reduce heat to medium. Add the mushrooms, onion, and garlic to the pot and cook, stir¬ring, until slightly softened, about 2 minutes. Stir in the wine, parsley, rosemary, and thyme. Return the chicken to the pot. Bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer, covered, 45 minutes or until chicken is tender.

Mother’s Day

Yeah, it’s now the Wednesday after Mother’s Day so I am a little behind, deal with it. The day was nice and Malky enjoyed it a lot. I did my usual domestic god stuff and Rivky made Malky a very nice home made card, all the while singing “Mother’s Day” over and over. The entire scene was really cute. For supper, I made one of Malky’s favorite dishes, Coq au Vin (chicken and wine for those that don’t speak or read French). For her Mother’s day gift, I got her a PDA. The Zire 31 to be exact. I am happy to report that she loves it and has already started using the address book and calendar, in addition to what she thought the main purpose was, to play Monopoly. That was the main reason why I got her a PDA to begin with. She kept taking my Treo 600 to play games. It only made sense to get her a palm of her own.
